What Are the Health Risks from Cribbing?

Peppermint oil has been used for humans for years as a natural remedy to soothe upset stomachs and help with nausea. It has been used as a horse cribbing deterrent as well, but the benefits of horsemint oil for horses haven't been scientifically proven. Some horses will take your advice and give up cribbing with the right encouragement, and other horses will never stop, in the same way, that some people will never stop biting their nails. If he can’t have access to turnout every day, make sure he has hay in his stall at all times. Toys may be a good idea to encourage natural oral behavior and prevent the development of cribbing in young horses who must be kept on stall rest.
Many people believe that cribbing behavior is learned from other horses. Research suggests that this is likely not the case, but if horses are exposed to similar conditions that put them at risk for cribbing, they may do it too. Horses are individuals with different personalities and quirks, just like humans. However, some risk factors put horses at a higher risk for cribbing or other unwanted stereotypic behaviors. If you suspect that ulcers are causing your horse's cribbing, it's best to get your veterinarian to do a scope of its stomach to get a proper diagnosis. If ulcers are present, your vet can provide you with treatment options and ways to manage the ulcers, which will help heal your horse and reduce the cribbing.
These muzzles don’t seem to cause any discomfort, but they appear to be more frustrating to horses wearing them than cribbing collars. In most climates, horses can be quite happy when living out full-time if they have access to a run-in shelter and are appropriately rugged up in inclement weather. "Cribbers are motivated to crib and will work as hard for an opportunity to crib as they will for a chance to eat sweet feed," she said. "This motivation makes keeping an established cribber from engaging in cribbing behavior particularly difficult."
Also please note that these behavioral modifications won’t help if the horse’s underlying reason for cribbing is due to pain or stress as opposed to boredom or loneliness. You’ll also want to rule out physical maladies and treat any ailments right away before the horse starts to develop his own coping mechanisms. Muzzles do a good job of preventing a horse from eating hay and grass, but they don't prevent cribbing or wind sucking. Before you buy a horse, foal, donkey, or mule that cribs, make sure you are willing to deal with the damage to fences, trees, and stables and cope with some health risks that may come with cribbing. Wood chewing often has a lot more to do with boredom than seeing other horses do it, but it can also be caused by a vitamin deficiency. They make pellets like QUITT that help to stop it by addressing the deficiency.
Give your horse time with other horses to provide socialization. Horses are social creatures, and they enjoy being with other horses. Try turning your horse out to pasture with other horses for at least several hours a day. If your horse doesn't have a stomach problem and cribbing has been a chronic problem, your vet may suggest having surgery to help prevent cribbing. If a horse has something to keep its mouth occupied, namely hay or a large pasture for grazing, it's less likely to crib.
Again, this idea is hypothetical, but it wouldn’t surprise me if researchers find it to be the case. While the research on this idea isn’t conclusive yet, there is some correlation between horses that are experiencing gastric ulcer pain and horses that crib. I personally know a horse that will crib on cross ties if he can. Think of it as a bad habit, like someone that chews their nails.
